"Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, waterbugs, tadpoles, frogs & turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, hickory nuts, trees to climb, animals to pet, hayfields, pine cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets – and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of his education." -Luther Burbank 1849 - 1926

Farmers Markets...Fun and Fruitful

LAST WEEK OF AUGUST

National Farmers Market Week You're encouraged to visit Farmers Markets in your local communities as part of National Farmers Market Week.

Farmers markets make fresh and nutritious fruits and vegetables readily available to consumers. These markets also allow farmers to market directly to consumers, generate income for family farms, and support communities by bringing the farm to the city.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) works to increase farmers markets to assist the small grower. Emphasis is placed on minority farmers and providing access to fresh fruits and vegetables to the urban consumer.

Nationally, farmers markets last year totaled 2,746 farmers markets, up from 2, 410 in 1996.

For more information on farmers markets nationwide, including the National Directory of Farmers Markets, visit the USDA website at http://www.ams.usda.gov/farmersmarkets.
