![]() Romaine Lettuce for salad gardensMini-romaine butter lettuce is a unique variety of lettice being sold in seed catalogs and seed racks. The delicious Baby Star variety is as attractive as it is delicious. The heads look something like a butterhead lettuce from a top down view, but this is actually a miniature Romaine lettuce. It has a crispy texture and nutritional value that you would expect from a lettuce of this dark green color. The leaves of Baby Star are dark green and shiny, very inviting in salads and a perfect size for sandwiches or hamburgers. They are smaller than regular Romaine leaves and quite crispy and sweet. Baby Star lettuce offers gardeners many beneficial vitamins and minerals including beta-carotene, vitamin C, folic acid, calcium, potassium and iron. The leaves contain anti-oxidants that work to prevent damage caused by free radicals, thus helping to protect the body against certain diseases. Baby Star is low in calories, high in fiber and contains bioflavonoids. The darker green leaf color simply highlights the fact that this lettuce is a good chocie to grow if you're a health conscious gardener. Baby Star was developed in Europe but is well adapted to growing conditions in North America -- east, west, north and south. It is a fine variety to grow in home gardens where growing conditions may not be perfect. Plants grow 4 to 5 inches tall, and the small Romaine heads are ready to cut about 65 days after plants emerge in the garden from direct seeding. For the gourmet gardener there is a little surprise inside the rounded outer leaves. Once the exterior leaves are removed, a delicate inner romaine heart can be found nestled in the middle. It is a wonderful treat, complimenting the sweet, delicate flavor of the outer leaves. this lettuce is for the discerning salad connoisseurs and gardeners who love to grow the latest gourmet varieties.
