"Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, waterbugs, tadpoles, frogs & turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, hickory nuts, trees to climb, animals to pet, hayfields, pine cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets – and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of his education." -Luther Burbank 1849 - 1926

Daylilies Color Up the Garden

The old time favorite, the daylily, is worth taking another look at. This perennial, unlike some other plants, has continued to be improved through hybridization so that the number and types available to the home gardener seem to be unlimited.

This colorful charmer not only comes in many shades and combinations of colors but in heights from eight inches to four feet. Then, consider the fact that you can have early bloomers, mid-season or late bloomers and also those that will come back for a second flush of bloom. Even all of this does not tell the whole story about daylilies when you consider that they can be decisuous, semi-deciduous or evergreen, fragrant, bloom at night only and have flowers that come in many forms ranging in size from a little over two inches to a whopping nine inches!

What more can one ask from one plant/ Well it helps that daylilies can literally grow in any part of the country, are simple to grow, have few problems with pests and diseases, are easily divided and are stunning in any landscape.

While the daylilly does grow in most any soil, it would really like to live in one that is loose and rich with pleanty of organic material. While it grows in the sun, a little shade is preferred in warmer areas.

ENJOY

Need a challenge? Enjoy the adventure of crossing day lilies. Clubs abound that will help you with this colorful adventure!

Innovation can cross over into the area of "hubris". Genetically engineered plants stretch the natural laws that have evolved over millions of years -- are are choices better than nature's? It's something to ponder.

MAKE A CHANGE
