"Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, waterbugs, tadpoles, frogs & turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, hickory nuts, trees to climb, animals to pet, hayfields, pine cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets – and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of his education." -Luther Burbank 1849 - 1926

Herb garden adventures

Useful gardens are getting more attention these days. Fruit. Vegetables. Herbs. Low water gardens. Shade landscaping. There's a specialized solution for every challenge. One tasty option is an herb garden.

I received a catalog from an herbal provider this week...and after sitting down to browse the pages, found memories of an earlier passion bubbling up...

In my early days of marriage and motherhood I fell in love with herb gardens...those wondrous, magical wagon wheels of color, aroma and texture. And usefullness!

So when we bought our first home, I turned my front yard into a giant herb garden. Without asking my neighbors if they had any alergies to bee stings or aromas, of course...:-) You can probably imagine the rest of the story!

My herb garden lasted two years...and the second year it was a pale shadow of the bumper crop of the first year. Several sections had to go! So many herbs are aromatic and attract the local honey bee and bumblebee population that it is important to make sure you take the human population into consideration.

That said...let me introduce you to a few treasures I found in this herb catalog from Richters. Maybe you'll find a few ways to make your gardens more "useful".

"Gardeners want more than the usual annuals and perennials, they want gardens that can enhance their lives. Herbs are perfect for today's useful gardens. They enhance food and drink, and can be used to treat minor ailments and improve health. And they are beautiful in their own right as ornamental bedding or specimen plants...." Richter's

ENJOY

Herb gardens are a natural companion to the love of eating...whether you enjoy salads or bread baking.

LEARN

We learn from our mistakes...and we don't make mistakes without trying.

MAKE A CHOICE

What I learned was that when we live in a community, all our choices and decisions have a community-wide impact. Visiting before making choices is a great community tool.

MAKE A CHANGE

What WILL you do today to move toward your goal? Even one small action today makes a difference. And you can add a little tomorrow and the next day... Together we will restore our environment in our community and around the world.
