"Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, waterbugs, tadpoles, frogs & turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, hickory nuts, trees to climb, animals to pet, hayfields, pine cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets – and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of his education." -Luther Burbank 1849 - 1926

Wildflower gardens and festivals

Ready for a wild adventure? -- wild FLOWERS, that is!

Celebrating Wildflowers emphasizes the aesthetic, recreational, biological, medicinal and economic values of our native flora, with over 15,000 different species recognized from the United States and Canada.

Several areas of the country are particularly rich in plant species, including California, Florida, the Pacific Northwest and the Southwest. If you are wondering about the native flora in your own area...or would like to explore the wonders that surround you as you travel, this is a quiet treasure worth it's weight in platinum!

An easy step toward appreciating wildflowers is to explore our nation's public lands. My family recently visited the vast Poppy Preserve in Southern California and were amazed that these flowers are so prolific, so golden, and so delicate. To see these carefully preserved corners of wildness gives hope and joy...and inspiration to do what we can do in our urban backyards to foster native plants for our native wildlife species. And for us!

You can also contact Botanical Gardens or call any of the contacts from this Calendar of Events.

Here is a comprehensive guide to wildflower locations and events for every state in the US. It's worth pressing up against your travel and vacation plans for the spring and summer! ... and fall! ...and maybe even winter!

Wildflowers are easy to spot and nearly all natural areas have guidebooks for beginners. Numerous guided walks, displays and presentations are available to aid you in your appreciation and interpretation of the value and wonders of wildflowers right under your nose!

And...Don't forget to point your favorite children at the Celebrating Wildflowers On-Line Coloring Book! With over 500 wildflower drawings from the Northwest & Texas Hill Country to choose from, you can open a child's eyes to the wonders of wildflowers.
