"Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, waterbugs, tadpoles, frogs & turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, hickory nuts, trees to climb, animals to pet, hayfields, pine cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets – and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of his education." -Luther Burbank 1849 - 1926

Science and Song with the Banana Slug String Band

I recently attended a Banana Slug String Band concert and was delighted with the delight (can I repeat that delightful adjective?) of the children in the audience. From the age of about 1 year old to ...well at least 80...everyone got into the act of clapping, swaying and singing with these animated musicians! I was impressed with how they made all those big scientific words attractive to their smallest and newest audience members through repetition, catchy tunes and body movement. Delightful!

The Banana Slug String Band is a group of lovable musicians and educators from the coastal redwoods of Northern California. The Slugs are "Airy" Larry Graff, Doug "Dirt" Greenfield, "Solar" Steve Van Zandt and "Marine" Mark Nolan.

With vocals, guitars, mandolin, bass, harmonica, banjo and percussion, Slug songs range from rockin' boogies to sensitive ballads; folk songs to reggae and rap. Music, theater, puppetry and audience participation create a fun-filled learning experience.

The Banana Slug String Band is committed to educational entertainment for children and families through interactive music and performance. They are dedicated to fostering positive attitudes about the environment, providing accurate information about natural history and science, promoting music appreciation, building self esteem in children, honoring creativity, supporting the arts in education and sparking in people a joyful sense of wonder. Through the production of tapes, CD's, videos, songbooks, picture books, curriculum, activity guides, teacher workshops and concerts, they make these values accessible to an increasingly wider audience. They believe that music is a powerful instrument for honoring diversity while uniting people for the common good.

This award winning band is celebrating their 20th anniversary and are still singing strong! Some of their recent CDs include "Goin' Wild", "Penguin Parade", and "Slugs at Sea". Get the picture? They're all about animals, habitat and the environment...and having fun with both music and nature.

I hope you check out their cheeky music and tell your friends about it. You might even ask a local children's group to bring them in for a concert. You'll love it!
