"Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, waterbugs, tadpoles, frogs & turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, hickory nuts, trees to climb, animals to pet, hayfields, pine cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets – and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of his education." -Luther Burbank 1849 - 1926

Roger Tory Peterson - Passion for the Natural World

Roger Tory Peterson brought a practical foundation to American ecology experience. His easy to use field guide books and studies made nature accessible to children as well as curious adults. The institute he established provides ongoing education about backyard nature in a fun way. You can visit their online site called The Electornic Naturalist and even ask questions, and use their educational materials in classes and family outings.

Their mission is to create passion for and knowledge of the natural world in the hearts and minds of children by inspiring and guiding the study of nature in our schools and communities.

Roger Tory Peterson (1908-1996) was the "father of the field guide" and the person who brought the tools for learning about the natural world into every person's home. He did it with his books, paintings, and countless articles in the popular press, documentary films and superb still photographs.

His vision of the future grew into a team of volunteers and staff who work and explore together to create resources in which each person is aware of and knows the names of the plants and animals on the street where they live.

Founded in 1984 in Roger Tory Peterson's hometown, Jamestown, NY, a course was set to become a national organization providing sound, basic information about nature. With a headquarters building, thousands of members, hundreds of volunteers , 10 staff members, and a passion for the natural world this dedicated team works every day to link people with the world they live in. The primary objective of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute is to promote nature study in the classroom. The Selborne Project, Nature Journals Workshop and NaturKind are just a few of the programs currently being offered by the Roger Tory Peterson Institute.
