"Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, waterbugs, tadpoles, frogs & turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, hickory nuts, trees to climb, animals to pet, hayfields, pine cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets – and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of his education." -Luther Burbank 1849 - 1926

Our Other Kids

I read a touching article about a teacher who considered his students "his other kids". While they are in his sight, he guides and protects them. Then they go home to their parents. His example inspired me. It made me recall how important "our other kids" are to us. And we to them.

Decades ago, my mother was touched when she heard the truism, "It takes a village to raise a child." She passed that wisdom on to me, and I hope to pass it on to you.

Nature is a practical way to learn about the connections between us all. Between me and your children. Between children and butterflies. Between butterflies and flowers. We learn about natural connections, and who we are, and we share life with "our other kids".

I'm going to practice guiding and protecting "my other kids"...and to share the secret joy and satisfaction that grows out of considering ALL children "our other kids". There's always a romp around the corner. A boulder to clear away for the next person. A smile to warm our heart. And a new generation to inspire life with possibilities!
