"Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, waterbugs, tadpoles, frogs & turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, hickory nuts, trees to climb, animals to pet, hayfields, pine cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets – and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of his education." -Luther Burbank 1849 - 1926

March of the Penguins - Nature Documentary about Emperor Penguins

How do you learn about the survival techniques of wildlife? By watching them longterm. But that isn't possible for most of us, so we seek out stories that synthesize scientific or folk wisdom and shares the essence of what those who have had direct experience can us. One such story is "March of the Penguins", an epic documentary that tells about the cute penguins as they nuzzle and court -- but also the strength of these blubbery little critters as they face harsh life and death struggles in the harshest environment on earth -- the South Pole.

March of the Penguins documents a year in the life of the Emperor Penguin. These flightless birds climb out of Antarctic waters and walk seventy miles inland to their ancient breeding grounds each winter. The march is only the first in a string of endurance tests, not the least of which is simply keeping warm amid the coldest temperatures on Earth.

Directed by Luc Jacquet and narrated in the English language version by Morgan Freeman, this National Geographic film is a skillfully crafted epic.
