"Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, waterbugs, tadpoles, frogs & turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, hickory nuts, trees to climb, animals to pet, hayfields, pine cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets – and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of his education." -Luther Burbank 1849 - 1926

Back to Natives Springtime Nature Events
in Orange County, Southern California

SPRING 2008: Southern California has an amazing richness of nature -- from mountains to wetlands to valleys and of course, the Pacific ocean with sandy beaches and rocky tidal zone habitats. Come enjoy our native wonders!

Wildflower Walk (Adults only)

March, 30,2008 9AM – 12PM
Join Back to Natives at Caspers Wilderness Park on a hike to search for wildflowers! We are likely to see fiddleneck, lupine, phacelia, wild hyacinth, popcorn flower, and much more! Bring your field guides, cameras, binoculars, water and a snack. It will be a strenuous hike to get up to East Ridge. Park in the old corral area at the back of the park. Parking is $5 for day use. For more information or to RSVP call 949-509-4787 or info@backtonatives.org

Bolsa Chica Hike: Salty air in the Spring! (all ages)

April 5, 9:00AM
Join Back to Natives at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve for a relaxing and fascinating hike led by Bolsa Chica Stewards Executive Director Kim Kolpin. Kim will tell us all about the tidal inlet restoration, which allows the ocean to flow directly into the historic wetlands at Bolsa Chica for the first time in 100 years! With 95% of California's coastal wetlands lost to development, the establishment of these restored wetlands will provide significant habitat for the more than 200 bird species, including the six endangered or threatened species, at Bolsa Chica. Bring your binoculars for a close up look at our feathered friends. The Bolsa Chica hike is hike #6 of our “Around the County in 18 Hikes” program in 2008. We’ll be keeping track of the number of times you join us, because at the end of the year those who have attended THE MOST hikes will be entered to win a fabulous prize! Visit www.backtonatives.org/specialevents.html for details on all 18 hikes and events. Meet at the lot near the corner of PCH and Warner. RSVP to info@backtonatives.org

Santiago Creek Week

May 12-18, 2008
While the urban environment in Orange County continues to change, hidden in its maze of neighborhoods, businesses, and roads are cascading waterfalls, ancient canyons of weathered sandstone, hillsides covered with wildflowers, shady oak woodlands, and the constant circulation of our drinking water. This fascinating urban oasis is known as the Santiago Creek Watershed. Santiago Creek flows from the Cleveland National Forest, through the canyon communities and on through Villa Park, Orange and Santa Ana, where it joins the Santa Ana River. Santiago Creek Week 2008 is a collaboratively sponsored series of events designed to draw attention to the Santiago Creek Watershed and its many important features and resources. With community organizations, local government agencies, and other stakeholders involved, this year's Creek Week is sure to be the best yet. Check out the schedule of events at http://www.santiagocreek.org/creekweek.htm. Please email jrobinson@santiagocreek.org for reservations.

Wish we could go to this, but YOU could!...
