Tertiary Sewer Plants to Save Water"People don’t like seeing their service rates go up," one water manager said. "People can see policemen and firemen, but they don’t think about sewage after they flush the toilet. It’s expensive to build a tertiary plant and some people just don’t want to pay for it."The value to the public is tenfold when recycled water from tertiary plants can be reused for irrigation, recreation, highway beautification, wildlife habitat and more. "Eventually all water will be reused,” said Greg Cash, engineering geologist with CRWQCB. "It’s only a matter of time." Pharmaceutical Drugs in GroundwaterCash said that current studies are being done now to determine the level of harm residual pharmaceuticals have on plants and wildlife and the level of treatment that would be needed to remove pharmaceuticals from wastewater. Families can prevent this problem in several ways. Never flush or wash chemicals of any kind -- especially drugs and medications -- down the drain, sink, or stool. Never overuse medications. Take what the doctor prescribes -- no more, no less. Improper medication, especially with antibiotics, can make the microbes stronger as they adapt to inadequate doses of medications. Stopping short of the prescribed care causes this evolutionary change in the micro-species of viruses, etc. Use preventative health practices such as proper diet and exercise to keep your immune system strong -- so that medications aren't needed as much! An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of medication!
