"Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, waterbugs, tadpoles, frogs & turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, hickory nuts, trees to climb, animals to pet, hayfields, pine cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets – and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of his education." -Luther Burbank 1849 - 1926

TerraForm One Crafts a Totally Self-sufficient New York City...what?

I've been researching sustainable cities -- urban farming, and urban agriculture. Having grown up on a suburban farm that supported most of our family's food needs, I know it's possible to have highly productive community farming without the detrimental effects of factory farms.

Terra Forma is taking this provocative idea to New York City ... New York CITY?

Urban sustainability is about this input-output balance. An integrated colony of life that includes humans as one of the many species residing and working in the colony.

My ideas are small compared to the scale of Mitchell Joachim of Terraform ONE. Large prototype city that is completely self sufficient...

Learn from him...he's onto something that is pulling together the possibilities. The technology is here. Now for the political and personal will to implement it. Some of the elements of a sustainable city include:

  • Vertical farms in public parks
  • Solar PV panels on all feasible unshaded roofspace
  • Integrate with renewable technologies such as wind turbines and wave harvesting
  • Longlasting discussions for better systems...

It's a theory. True. But vision comes first...then solutions...then momentum. Vehicle design takes 15-20 years to see a paradigm shift. It takes time.

Architectural technologies take at least 40 years to see ubiquitous shifts in design.

A city takes 100 to 150 years to see massive fully implemented effects of a redesigned community.
