"Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, waterbugs, tadpoles, frogs & turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, hickory nuts, trees to climb, animals to pet, hayfields, pine cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets – and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of his education." -Luther Burbank 1849 - 1926

Peonies, Peonies, Perfection!

I fell in love with peonies when we rented a house with a whole row of pink and red peonies along the back of our new home. These sweet smelling, delicate, wondrous flowers captured my heart forever!

Every time I see photos of peonies, a flood of memories come back ... of the early days with our infant son, of the sunshine, the lovely backyard, the heavenly aromas...mmmmmmmmm!

A recent pleasure is the occasional enjoyment of a HUGE peony on my screensaver. No aroma...but the memories flood back.

Peony for aroma

And today I discovered that Martha Steward has created an iPad "Glossary of Peonies"....

Martha Stewart has just released a truly sumptuous iPad version of her Living magazine to the app store. The special issue, created exclusively for the iPad, features all original content, bringing innovative functionality to inspiring ideas, practical “how-to” guides and gorgeous photography.

Just one example of this is the way in which the iPad version of the magazine opens with a moving image of a single peony in bloom, comprising 180 stills photographed over 10 hours to create the effect of the petals opening in front of your eyes. From there, you can swipe, touch and toggle through the interactive content, including a panorama of Martha’s peony garden, “how-to” stories about flower-arranging, entertaining, decorating, crafting, cooking and beauty, as well as a breathtaking photo essay and video about salmon fishing in Alaska."

I don't know what salmon fishing has to do with peonies... but maybe "the garden" is about more than flowers ;-)
